When you
move into a new house, there are a million things to remember. You need to
learn the HOA rules. You need to stock your pantry. You need to set up
utilities and you probably need to do at least a little renovation and
repainting. In among your mile-long to-do list, don't forget these three small
must-have in case of emergencies.
Smoke Detectors
Smoke
detectors were probably mentioned in your house inspection. In certain states,
the seller is even required to replace all the smoke detectors and make sure
they're all working and up to date. Still, one of the first things you should
do is check your smoke detectors to make sure that they're working and where
they need to be.
Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are often
available for free from your local fire department, and they can also give you
guidance on where to place your smoke detectors and how often to replace
them.
Fire Extinguishers
In
addition to smoke detectors make sure to have a fire extinguisher in your
kitchen at the very least. Fire extinguishers have expiration dates, so make
sure that yours is still good, and while you're at it, make certain you know
how to use it properly. There will be many places to get fire extinguishers NYC or your city.
First Aid Kit
Last but
not least, make sure that you have a well-stocked first
aid kit before you move in. Moving in can
be a stressful time, and something small like this is easy to overlook.
Unfortunately, moving in can also be a dangerous time with lots of moving heavy
furniture and hanging pictures and getting on ladders. It's not a good time to
be without a first aid kit.
Don't let these small but vitally important items slide
off your move-in to-do list. They're easy to overlook but no one should be
without them.
