How to Choose Healthcare Equipment for Home Care

As we get older, we want to keep hold of our independence for as long as possible without being carted off to a care home. There is a range of healthcare providers out there that supply everything from equipment to alarming systems. However, the world of health care equipment can be confusing if you don’t know where to go. That’s why we’ve brought together a run-through of what equipment you might need and where to source it.

The Right Health Care Products

When finding the correct equipment for your home, you may want to consult a professional for their advice. You need to speak to as many people as possible. An occupational therapist will be able to offer you help regarding what alterations can be made to your home to make it accessible and safe. Further, a physiotherapist will assist you in narrowing down the mobility equipment you may need and how to buy them privately. There are also community nurses, who support your local GP and can supply a range of GP medical supplies essential for the provision of home care.

Buying Care Products

No matter what your needs are, there are plenty of resources available to help you make the changes and buy the equipment. For larger items including mobility scooters, a representative from a mobility shop should be able to visit you at home to save you from making your way to them. In the UK there are Disabled Living Centres that are designed to support you in making appropriate choices - they will even let you try out equipment before you buy. When it comes to stairlifts and other large equipment, ensure that your supplier is registered with the BHTA.

Getting the Equipment

Once you know what you need, you need to source it. Available equipment will typically be held in a central storage facility. However, local authorities sometimes have access to differing equipment. The best place to start is with contacting your local authority.

Equipment Loan or Hire

Sometimes, all you need is a short-term equipment loan to help you on your way. Luckily, numerous mobility shops are willing to rent out their equipment for a set amount of time. This can be extremely helpful if you are unsure about the purchase or only need it to go on holiday. Further, the Red Cross can lend equipment for a small charge/donation.

VAT Exemption

With registration for a disability or chronic health condition, you could be eligible to claim VAT exemption on some products. The general rule to follow is that if it’s built for the sole purpose of assisting those with disabilities, it will be exempt from VAT. To be accepted for VAT exemption, you must have a permanent health condition - your age alone will not count, unfortunately.

Making small changes to our lives through specialist equipment can help us maintain independence for longer in life. Start by contacting your local authority and consulting with healthcare professionals.
