How to Prepare for Your First Time in Chicago

Are you considering a St. Louis to Chicago road trip? Will this be your initial visit to Chicago? I just spent a few days in Chicago for the first visit in over two decades! I had a terrific experience exploring the town, and I plan to return in less than two decades.

I've decided to pass on some of what I learned over my previous trip. In addition, there are several amusing things that everybody should see on their initial trip to Chicago. You may also see my short video below, which covers all my favorite experiences!

Chicago attractions

First, Chicago offers a plethora of attractions and activities! You should plan ahead of time where you'd like to travel and what kinds of activities you are interested in.

Consider purchasing a Chicago CityPASS to enjoy a large discount on admission to many of the town's top tourist destinations. Among these are the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. It also removes the requirement to purchase separate tickets. You will scan a single barcode as you enter locations.

Other museums in the city range from old to downright eccentric. I visited the Museum of Illusions for a quick tour. If you enjoy mind-bending artwork and optical illusions, here is the spot for you. They'll even place your head on a platter.

Food To Try While Visiting Chicago

Depending on who you ask, there are a few "must-try" Chicago favorites. Deep-dish pizza is popular, yet most residents say they rarely eat it. If you want a fun tour and historical lesson on pizza in the city, go to Chicago Pizza Tours. If you're traveling from St. Louis to Chicago. You'll be pleased to discover that thin-crust pizza is available here as well!

To be honest, the one food experience I heard about before my trip was ice cream, not pizza or hot dogs. The Rainbow Cone debuted in Chicago in 1926. It has five distinct flavor layers: orange sherbet, pistachio, Palmer House, strawberry, and chocolate. I must say, it was rather wonderful. I ate the whole thing. (I had mine in a cup because my teeth are sensitive. The girl at the counter advised me that it still counted if I skipped the cone.

Walking around Chicago

I burned some calories by walking over to Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. The fountain may be familiar from the opening scene of the television series Married With Children. To clarify, the fountain has nothing to do with Buckingham Palace or England. It does have 1.5 million gallons of water and gives regular displays every hour.

Speaking of walking, Chicago is quite walkable! If this is your first time in Chicago, pack some comfortable shoes so you can explore on foot!

You can enjoy the Chicago Riverwalk or a walk along Lake Michigan. Between Navy Pier and the museums on Michigan Avenue's south end. There were a lot of people walking around during the day and into the early evening. I felt safe, though it is always prudent to remain mindful of your surroundings.
